from BARDO

The stars are in our belly; the Milky Way our umbilicus.

Is it a consolation that the stuff of which we’re made

is star-stuff too?

– That wherever you go you can never fully disappear –

dispersal only: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen.

Tree, rain, coal, glow-worm, horse, gnat, rock.

July

windshift to the northwest

waterlight refracted from trees to path
and back; and above in the high canopy
already a cherry leaf slips its perch
to drift its orange flame down the spiral
to earth; just as she a year ago let
her fierce playful grip on life
dissolve, returning back home

leaving us her imprint on each morning
